Adoption Process

Adopting a new best friend is an exciting and fulfilling experience, a process TAHS aims to make as smooth for the adopter as we do for the animal. Below is a brief description of the adoption process once you arrive at the shelter.

When you arrive at the shelter, we invite you to take a look around and meet the animals.  When you find an animal you'd like to get to know better, we will ask you to spend at least 30 minutes in one of our bonding rooms, spending time with the animal to see how it interacts with you and your family and if it's personality fits well with the type of pet you are looking for.  We are happy to let you spend time in the bonding room with each pet you may be interested in, to see which is the best fit for you and your family. Our staff and volunteers are happy to answer questions about the animals and we will provide you with whatever background information we may have regarding that pet. (Please keep in mind, we do not always know the history or background of all the animals we have available for adoption, depending on how they came to TAHS.)

Once you have gotten to know the pet you are visiting with and decide that this is the pet you would like to adopt, we will have you fill out our adoption application.  Once you've completed the adoption application, you will meet with one of our adoption counselors who will review the application and go over any questions they may have or that you may have.  If you currently have a dog at home and you are thinking about adopting another dog from TAHS, you will need to bring in your resident dog in to meet your potential new dog before we can complete the adoption. Please note: If you rent your home or apartment, we will need to speak to your landlord or see a copy of your lease to verify that pets are permitted on the property.

After the application is completed, your adoption counselor will go over the adoption contract  and your pet's medcial history with you.  Once this is complete, you can take your new pet home!

Please note: If you are applying to adopt a pit pull type dog, the application/verification process is slightly different.  One of our adoption counselors will be happy to go over that with you when you fill out the application.
