How Children Can Help The Animals

There are several ways that children can make life better for the homeless animals in their community.  You can help by raising money to care for abused and neglected animals or you can help collect or make items for the animals. Here is a sample of what other children have done to help out the shelter animals:

  • Hold a bake sale and sell items at your school or church
  • Have a coin drive with your classmates
  • Make toys and treats for animals and sell at school.
  • Recycle cans and give the proceeds to the Humane Society
  • Ask a local business to let you hold a car wash with proceeds going to the shelter animals
  • If you're having a birthday party, ask your guests to bring donations or items for the shelter animals in place of gifts.

Another great way to help the homeless animals is to hold a collection drive around your neighborhood or at your church or school for items needed at the Humane Society.  Some of the items we are always in need of include:

  • Canned cat food for the sick and underage kittens.
  • Canned dog food for the sick and underage puppies.
  • Cat litter
  • Fleece cat hammocks for the cats to lie in-they love these!
  • Dog treats (especially Beggin' Strips, Pupperoni, Canine Carryouts, and chew bones)
  • Dog toys (especially Kongs and rope toys and plush toys)
  • Cat treats (especially catnip and Pounce)
  • Cat toys
  • Blankets and towels

Once you have collected all of your goodies, stop by the Toledo Area Humane Society and let the animals thank you in person for your support and donations.  The Toledo Area Humane Society is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10am until 6pm!
