Notes from our Humane Officers’ Blotters...

Paged to respond to frantic call about a dog hanging by its chain in a backyard in S. Toledo, possibly choking to death. While en route received additional call informing me that the dog was no longer moving, presumable dead. Upon approach, I observed the dog hanging by the chain lifelessly, immediately unhooked the chain and gave the animal two light chest compressions. Positive response, apparently just had the wind knocked out of him. Transported frightened dog to TAHS for TLC from staff. Successful adoption.

Called to assist a homeless cat that had its head stuck in a corn can. Animal unable to see, and had managed to position itself inside the wheel of a concerned citizen’s pickup truck. Transported the frightened animal to TAHS vet where health care staff calmed the cat and eased the can off her head. Observed no injuries, except to the cat’s pride. Adopted by staff member (me).

Received an urgent phone call from a person wishing to remain anonymous stating that there was a very sick puppy in a neighbor’s back yard. Caller said the puppy’s littermate had died the day before and was concerned that the remaining pup would not last much longer. Responded immediately to find the 4-month old pup lying in wet grass, too weak to get up. Rushed pup to TAHS for vet car. Treatment received for dehydration and severe malnutrition. Pup responded immediately to medical care.

Kitten reported found by some kind souls in a church parking lot. Age estimated to be 3-4 months old. Appeared to have received a swift kick to the ribs. Possible break or nerve damage to right rear leg. Noted he was already neutered, was well fed, and loved human contact. Dr. Johnson did find nerve damage, and was able to save the cat’s leg after operating. New owners report he is quite agile and able to climb up the curtains quite well. Gave them our behavior help-line number.

Emaciated boxer siblings discovered tied outside in torrential downpour. Hypothermia suspected. Transferred immediately to Humane Society clinic for treatment and safekeeping. Vet examination revealed mild hypothermia, malnutrition and parasites. Boxers fattened up and socialized (spoiled) by doting staff. Adopted together. Named Jackie (F) and Dempsey (M) for winning the fight for their lives.

2-month old Rottweiler pup reported suffering from a homemade tail "docking" with a rubber band. Animal found tied by a rope outside, no shelter or water noted. Extreme mutilation at the hind end where pup attempted to bite rubber band off. Pup immediately confiscated and rushed to shelter. Dr. Johnson amputated tail and treated infection. Pup recovered fully and displayed affectionate disposition. Owner charged with cruelty.
